With dreams as big as his ears, Ralphie left North Carolina last year to come north and live with his Mom Holly and Dad Chris on NE side of the Hill. In just a short time, this two year old “lab mix” has become the best hide and seek player in all of NE, and is the go-to dog if you want to know where all the squirrels live. Ralphie currently really likes to chew on his leash and chomp dents into all his ChuckIt! balls, but he says it’s just to show the squirrels he’s tough….he’s a lover not a fighter after all.

Ralphie was adopted from Rural Dog Rescue in Washington, D.C. RDR was founded by the same people who own Howl to the Chief, another favorite spot for Capitol Hill dogs.

Russell

Russell is a gentle 9-year old Pitbull who lives in NE with his Dad Kyle and his Mom Ajia. The trio moved to Capitol Hill relatively recently, but Russell has already made friends with Capitol Police officers who give him treats when he goes with his mom on her morning runs. He really enjoys exercising, and is a big fan of carrots, peanut butter, yummies, saying hey to other dogs, and climbing on his dad.

This good boy spent the last five years with his foster mom Vicki who taught him all his good boy ways, and Kyle and Ajia gave him his forever home last May. He was adopted from the Partnership for Animal Welfare in Greenbelt, MD.

Banks and Chinook

Banks, a yellow Labrador, and Chinook, a Shepard, are two good SE boys who have military-related names, which is apt because Mom Kimberly and Dad Brenden are currently active duty in the US Army.

Banks, now 11, was named after Colonel Aaron Bank, who founded the US Army Special Forces, or Green Berets. Banks was a runt when Kimberly got him as a puppy, but he’s grown up to be a big dog who looks sharp in green just like his mom and dad. Chinook, now 7, was adopted from a California no-kill shelter five years ago, and came with his name. Kimberly and Brendan thought the name of a cool black Army helicopter with two big rotors was just right for their cool black dog with two big ears, so they kept it.

Bikes or thunderstorms make Chinook nervous. But big brother Banks, who is very passive and mellow, just reminds him about all their fun swimming and squirrel-chasing adventures, and all becomes right in his world.

Sammie and Hunter

Hunter. a two year old English Setter, and Sammie, a year old border collie mix, are a serious duo, especially when it comes to treats. They are super well-trained, and Mom Audra and Dad Matt said that this love of yummies made clicker training of the two easier than expected. Hunter and Sammie bonded over a love of cheese and chasing squirrels. Separately, Hunter is a champion cuddler, and Sammie excels at playing fetch.

We were lucky to catch this fun family just before they left the NE side of the Hill for greener pastures (and a yard). You can follow the new adventures of this dynamic duo as country kids via @brownearedgirl on Instagram.

Sammie was rescued from Rural Dog Rescue in Washington, D.C. RDR was founded by the owner of Howl to the Chief, another favorite establishment of all Capitol Hill dogs.

Clementine

Clementine, a seven-month old Mini Cavapoo, recently moved to the SE side of Capitol Hill with her mom, Clair. Named after Winston Churchill’s wife, Clementine was excited to roam the Capitol and Supreme Court grounds, and bounced around like a pinball. She thinks peanut butter is the best food group, and is always up for a good game of rope tug.

Shi Shi

Ms. Shi Shi, or Shi for short, was saved literally and figuratively by her mom, Angela. Shi’s previous owner wasn’t able to take care of Shi properly so Angela stepped in and gave this gorgeous velvet hippo a loving and devoted home. Shi Shi is 7 now, with the cutest underbite, and is far more carefree than she looks. She isn’t a fan of skateboards, but other dogs and butt skritches are the best things as far as she’s concerned. And toys she can take apart. Shi and Angela live in NE.

Tonks and Neville

NEers mom Brittini and dad Roger are big Harry Potter fans and thought the personas of Tonks and Neville were similar to their dogs. The HP Tonks can change her looks, and the dog Tonks has spots on her face which make her look different depending on which side of her you see. The HP Neville is shy and timid but saves the day; Tonk’s brother Neville is timid at first but can save the day with his lightning fast speed.

Neville, a Chihuahua-mix, is also the best finder of every tennis ball on Capitol Hill. Tonks, a Beagle/Jack Russell mix, can tell you where every squirrel is hiding.

Both Tonks and Neville were adopted from Save the Tails Rescue in Leesburg, VA.

Jimbo and Lila

Jimbo (short for Gentleman Jim) and Lila are the most spry and energetic 12 year old pups you’ll ever meet. Jim is a completely cute chatty Kathy when other pups are around. Sister Lila just rolls her eyes at him-younger brothers amirite, she says. But one thing they can both agree on is that treats are the greatest. Mom Johanna and dad Courtney indulge them, but being super active themselves, they make sure the pups keep their svelte figures.

Both of these cuties live in SE and were adopted from Humane Rescue Alliance.

Gunner

Gunner is a frosty faced rascal who lives in SE. Now 13, he still loves to run around like a pup half his age, and steal every single tennis ball he can find. His two super powers are: 1) fitting two (or more!) tennis balls in his mouth at one time, and 2) recalling where he found a ball once, no matter how long ago. His mom Elena’s throwing arm is really good now from all the years of throwing Gunner his ball; Gunner thinks that she could even play shortstop for the Nationals!

Chilly

Chilly was a Jersey boy originally and comes from a family of show dogs. But that wasn’t the life for Chilly, he more prefers park life and walks with his mom, Michele. He loves to play chase with his pup friends and loves to talk! He’s been in SE DC less than a year and already lost his Jersey accent!
